Marshall’s life was nothing short of cinematic. Born in 1945 and raised by his maternal grandparents in a traditional Lakota-speaking home, he served as a childhood lookout at just four years old when the sacred Sun Dance was outlawed by the U.S. government and performed under the cover of darkness. He rose to become a master Lakota craftsman, a skilled traditional archer, and a wilderness survival expert who forged his own bows and arrows. Immersed in the oral history of his ancestors, Marshall synthesized centuries of traditional wisdom into 21 groundbreaking books, eventually earning induction into the Western Writers Hall of Fame in 2023 and receiving the prestigious Owen Wister Award alongside legendary Pulitzer Prize winners like N. Scott Momaday and Louise Erdrich.
